As I gaed oot on a bricht summers morn
Over lofty hills, moorland and
mountain
It was there I met a bonnie wee
lass
While I wi others was oot
a huntin
No silk nor stockings did she wear
Neither had she hat nor had she
feather
But her golden curls in ringlets
fair
In gentle breeze played round her
shoulder.
Now I said my lassie why roam your lain
Why roam your lain amang the heather
She says my faithers far
frae hame
And Im herdin all his
ewes the gaither
Noo I said my lassie if yed be
mine
And yed care to lie on a
bed o feather
In silks and satins ye shall shine
Gin yell gang wi me
and leave the heather.
She said kind sir your offers good
But weel I ken it was meant for
laughter
For I ken ye are a rich squires
son
And Im a poor lame shepherds
daughter
But had ye been a shepherd loon
Herdin sheep on yonder valley
Or had ye been a ploughmans
son
Wi all my heart I would hae
loed ye
No I hae been to halls and I hae been
to balls
I hae been to London and Balquidder
But the bonnist lassie that ever
I did spy
She was herdin all her ewes
together
Noo we both sat down upon the plain
We sat a while and we talked together
And she left her sheep for tae
stray their lain
While I wooed my queen amang the
heather
