Recorded on 'Half Ower, Half Ower tae Aberdour'
by Jack Beck
The Tradition Bearers - Scots Songs and Ballads Series LTCD1006

Far ower yon heilan’ hills sae fair,
there lived a lassie wi’ a hairt fu’ sair,
she walk-ed oot on the lang simmer day,
tae see the sojers paradin’.

Chorus:

For they looked sae neat as they mairched away,
the drums they do beat and the pipes they do play,
which maks pair Mary tae sigh and say,
"they’re awa’ wi’ my bonny heilan’ sojer".

"Noo I ha’e twenty pound in store,
and I ha’e a hairt worth twenty times o’er
and I’ll gi’e it tae the laddie that I adore,
I’m ga’in tae follow up my bonny heilan’ sojer".

"O, lassie, lassie yir fortune is but sma’,
and what if in some foreign battle I should fa’,
when yir far, far awa’ frae yir daddie and a’?
be adviséd by a heilan’ sojer".
