Recorded on 'Half Ower, Half Ower tae Aberdour'
by Jack Beck
The Tradition Bearers - Scots Songs and Ballads Series LTCD1006

Three Gypsies cam tae oor ha’ door and o, but they sang bonny o,
they sang sae sweet and sae complete, they stole the hairt o’ a lady o.

O she cam trippin’ doon the stair wi’ a’ her maids afore her o,
and when they spied her weel faured face they cast the glamour ower her o.

O, it’s ye’ll tak aff yir bonny silken dress, and ye’ll pit on yir plaidie o,
and ye’ll traivel on this lee lang day, tae follow wi’ the gypsy laddie o.

So she’s ta’en aff her bonny silken dress and she’s pit on her plaidie o,
and she’s traivelled on that lee lang day and she’s followed wi’ the gypsy laddies o.

Lord Cassilis he cam hame at e’en, he wis speerin’ for his lady o,
ane did cry and the ither did reply, she’s awa’ wi’ the gypsy laddies o

Gae saddle tae me the bonny bonny black, for the broon was ne’er sae speedy o,
and I’ll win awa’ this lee lang nicht tae speeir for my ain bonny lady o

O it’s he rade east and he rade west and he rade through Kirkcaldy o,
and there he spied his ain bonny may, she wis lyin’ wi’ the gypsy laddies o.

It’s wad ye forsake yir hooses and yir land, wad ye forsake yir baby o,
and wad ye forsake yir ain wadded lord, tae gang wi’ the gypsy laddies o?

It’s I wad forsake my hooses and my land, and I’d forsake my baby o,
and I wad forsake my ain wadded lord, tae gang wi’ the gypsy laddies o.

Last nicht I slept in a fine feather bed, wi’ my guid lord beside me o,
but the nicht I maun lie in a cauld barn shed, in the airms o’ a gypsy laddie o.

We were three gypsies a’ in a row, and sang sweet and bonny o,
but the nicht we will be, high hingit frae a tree, for the stealin’ o’ Cassilis lady o.
